What is SafeScran?
SafeScran is an app for finding allergy-aware restaurants and scanning packaged food barcodes to check them against your allergies — built specifically for the UK market.
Which allergies does it cover?
The barcode scanner checks products against all 14 legally recognised UK/EU major allergens, including Milk, Gluten, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Eggs, Fish, Crustaceans, Molluscs, Soybean, Sesame, Mustard, Celery, Lupin and Sulphur Dioxide. Restaurant listings currently cover gluten-free menus, dedicated gluten-free fryers, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian and dog-friendly — we're working towards the full allergen list for restaurants too as more businesses join.
Is SafeScran free?
Yes — SafeScran is free to browse restaurants, scan products and save your allergy profile. We're planning a premium tier further down the line, likely covering verified-restaurant filtering and other features we haven't built yet, but the core app will stay free.
When can I download the app?
We're in private beta on Android now, with a public release to follow. Join the beta list above and we'll email you the moment there's something to install.
How do restaurants get verified?
Right now, every badge you see has been checked by the SafeScran team — cross-referenced against the restaurant's own information and reviews that mention it. No restaurants have claimed their listing yet, but owners will soon be able to claim theirs and confirm their own details directly.
